If you’ve looked into teeth straightening options, you’ve undoubtedly come across the concept of clear aligners like Invisalign. The idea that you can get straighter teeth faster, in greater comfort, and without showing off a mouthful of metal every time you open your mouth can be immensely appealing. The tricky part is that not everyone is a good candidate for Invisalign. So who is?
Discipline
When it comes to traditional metal braces, you don’t have to worry about anything when it comes to the installation process. Nor do you need to concern yourself with removing or replacing them. In that way, they can be easier for some people. Those who choose to use Invisalign must remember to remove their aligners in order to eat and clean their teeth. More importantly, they must remember to put them back in when they are finished eating and cleaning their teeth. You have to keep Invisalign aligners in your mouth for at least 22 hours every single day in order for them to work. In that sense, you must have the discipline to use them, remove them, and replace them properly in order to be a good candidate.
Minor to Moderate Corrections Needed
Invisalign can fix a variety of issues. If you have crooked teeth, small gaps between teeth, a normal over- or underbite, an overbite, or crowded teeth, you may be able to address those issues with Invisalign aligners. It’s important to note that the corrections needed should be in the mild to moderate range. If the needed corrections are too severe, Invisalign won’t be able to fix them.
Concerns about Traditional Metal Braces
Having concerns about traditional metal braces is not enough by itself to make you a good candidate for Invisalign, but it certainly can be a reason for pushing you towards it if other criteria are met. Invisalign aligners tend to be more comfortable than metal braces and are practically invisible when you wear them. That’s especially helpful for professionals who don’t want their image to be impacted by their teeth straightening treatments, or for teens who may feel self conscious as well.
While not everyone is a good candidate for Invisalign, many people certainly are. People who have the discipline to properly wear the aligners, who need minor to moderate corrections, and don’t want to be troubled with the discomfort or appearance of traditional metal braces may find that they are one of those fortunate individuals. Remember, if you aren’t sure and would like to know, you can always talk to Dr. Tori Matthys or Dr. Chad Carver about your questions during an orthodontic consultation.
